Alex Gordon Signs For $72M/4...The Wilpons Have No Excuse Now For When They Don't Sign Anyone

 

So Alex Gordon either gives the hometown discount or simply takes the best he could get, but either way the outfield market is now set. I feel like most people assumed he’d get 5 years, and settles for 4. And not that 18 AAV is that low but I think there was some thought it would get up to that 20 per year range.

And so now that leaves Cespedes and Upton still out there, working in an outfield market thats lower than everyone expected. Gone are the days of Yo making 175 million dollars. There is no OF option out there that will be prohibitively expensive. Both Cespedes and Upton will be attainable for almost anybody. Certainly for a New York franchise just coming off a World Series appearance.

Which is why this Gordon signing should be a disaster for the Wilpons. They were going to be able to sit back and let Yo walk because it sounded like some franchise would stupidly overpay for him. Not many fans could say Yo is worth 150+ with a straight face. (I personally think the Mets need to strike now and as a should-be-Big-Market-Franchise, I think they should just overpay for him. But logically speaking, I cant fault a team for balking at that sort of price tag for a guy like Ces.) Most fans would have understood the Mets not overpaying to that extent. They had a built in excuse. But that excuse is most likely gone. 120-125 can probably get you Cespedes right now. Upton in the same ball park. There’s absolutely NO EXCUSE anymore.

It wont matter. The Mets have already broken off talks and never had any intention of signing him. Alex Gordon’s contract doesnt change any of that. But I cant let the Wilpons off the hook. I feel like its my duty to point out whenever these cocksuckers are doing an intentionally bad job because they arent financially or mentally capable of running a baseball franchise. Every time the Wilpons waste another minute of these starters’ windows they deserved to be publicly ridiculed for it. Greatest gift a franchise has ever been granted, and now bonus gift in the form of a soft OF market, and they still arent gonna do a goddam thing. Worst people on the planet earth.
